In this talk, we will introduce two methods of creating instance image and demonstrate their Pros and Cons.

1. Instance image from Nova side:

Using nova image-create command, instance image can be created online and the file system will be frozen by Nova which will maintain the consistency of the data. However, the created image will depend on original system volume and snapshot.

2. Instance image from Cinder side:

Using cinder upload-to-image command, instance image can be created in qcow2 or raw format, which will be independent of original system volume. However, the image cannot be created online.

Those two images are applicable to different scenario:

1. The first method is applicable for user who has high demand of image creation speed and tends to maintain the original system and snapshot.

2. The second method is applicable for user who wants to delete original system volume or snapshot.
